    With the year drawing to a close, clients are thinking about how their portfolios will look from a tax perspective. Given the volatility of the market in 2009, client portfolios are likely to have both winners and losers this year making it imperative that advisors examine the tax ramifications of any year-end selling and alternative strategies.

    "Let's say your client has a stock which has doubled," one advisor counsels. "He wants to sell it and take the profits but he doesn't want the tax bill. Perhaps he wants to extend the capital gains period or he has no losses to offset the profit. He can write a call and a put into the next year effectively collaring the stock. This eliminates the risk of loss for the remaining year and moves the unrealized gain into the following year."
